Trewern Day 4

Group 1 - Led by Dom and Vicky, our instructors for the day, we stayed at the Centre to tackle rock climbing and forest skills. The group listened brilliantly and helped each other to scale great heights. After lunch, we hit the 'forest skills' activity; firelighting, campfire cooking, and general creativity. The children really got into this session and created their own shelters, rabbit traps and even an obstacle course. This was a wonderfully creative session which the pupils thoroughly enjoyed. A brilliant end to a fantastic week! (Mr McTaggart)

Group 2 - Today we went to Porth-yr-Ogof Cave. The children learned how the caves were formed and then how to negotiate their way through a myriad of passages and tunnels under ground. All the children participated fully; they enjoyed going through the 'washing machine', 'worm hole', 'mud chute', and the infamous 'letter box'. It was an exhilarating experience for one and all. Group 3 - Group 3 had a very busy final day. We began the morning by climbing right to the highest point of Hay Bluff, the largest mountain within the Black Mountain range. We were shown a stream which marked the border between England and Wales so the children were able to stand with one foot in England and one foot in Wales! In the afternoon we went gorge walking in the Dulas Brook and returned absolutely drenched after sliding down rocks and showering under waterfalls. Well done to the whole group who have really challenged themselves and kept smiling all day. (Miss Risius)

ound us but hardly ever on us amazingly as we walked up through loads of bracken, mushrooms and sheep's unmentionables. The group named itself the Red Stars and we each gave ourselves a 'red' name. In the afternoon we went gorge walking and although it was cold, the group had a great time and did everything asked of them including army crawling down a rocky waterfall!! Trewern Day-2

Group 1- Mountain walking took us to a new area - The Begyns, about a 20 min drive from Trewern. It rained all a

Group 2 - We became mountain goats today, scaling Hay Bluff some 600metres above sea level. The children proved to be magnificent hill walkers getting to the top in record time of 45 minutes. On the way we saw the beautiful Welsh ponies and a small number of Shetland ponies too. Being so high up meant we could see views for miles around which impressed us all. In the afternoon we put on our wet suits, layers of warm jumpers and red waterproofs and then went gorge walking. Wading in cold, cold, cold water was tremendous fun; we slid about, made a human dam and sloshed about in water falls - it was great. Everyone had a turn in leading the group today and all proved to be confident, considerate leaders. It was a pleasure to see Year 6 children working so positively for and on behalf of each other. Group 3 - Today we were on the water! Everyone really enjoyed the canoeing because most of us had not done it before. We ended up learning some great skills navigating a boat. Even though we had some rainy periods throughout the day, that did not dampen our spirits or deter them from thoroughly enjoying ourselves. The highlight of the day seemed to be when Lucy T. and Ryan (even though they deny it) capsized the canoe sending Mr. DesRoches and everyone in the canoe underwater! The kids finished off with some hot chocolate and great discussions about the fun we had.

Trewern Day-2

Group 1 - Fresh from the success of the previous caving day, Group 1 set of for Pencelli for a spot of canoeing on the canal. The group were rather subdued in the morning but after a shot of hot chocolate, they perked up in the afternoon. We stood up in our canoes, played simon says and finished with races. The group had to keep the discipline together to all lift the canoes back to the minibus at Talybont. the children seemed to really enjoy the experience but found it tough to co-ordinate all the skills required. (Mr McTaggart)

Group 2 - We began our day with adventures in forest skills. First of all we went hunting for logs, twigs and other fuel for the camp fire. We learned how to light a camp fire safely and enjoyed cooking a light lunch. We built shelters and other interesting constructions, showing off our skills of imagination and design. In the afternoon we embarked on a climbing activity which everyone excelled at doing. All the children worked hard to concentrate on the instructions and took everyone's safety very seriously. They operated the equipment carefully and as a result everyone climbed several walls of varying degrees of difficulty. I think some children could audition for the next 'Spiderman' film, they were such impressive climbers. (Mrs Gough)

Group 3 - Today we made our way to the caves. It was a day that started out with worries, rumors and a little trepidation. Although it started out this way, everyone was eager to face their challenges and make clear judgments for themselves about the caves. Everyone rallied their courage and strength and faced the unknown. They went into the caves together and realised that there was very little to worry about and ended up having a fabulous time! Valuable lessons were learned today. Everyone "gave it a go" and was open-minded about it. They were so happy they did, because it turned out to be the best day so far. It also made it easier getting them to try new food dinner time too! :)

Trewern - Day 1

Group 1 - Caving! Only four other school groups were exploring the complex of caves at Porth-yr-Ogof which left lots of time for the group to learn about caves for themselves. Although there were some nerves at first, by the end of the day everybody completed the "WormHole" which was the first time in Instructor James' 12 years of taking groups there that everyone had finished the challenge. He was very impressed and we finished with a cold, wet wade across the stream at the cave entrance. Group 1 have set a very high standard for others to follow this week. Well done! (Mr McTaggart)

Group 2 -We have had a great deal of fun canoeing on the Breacon-Monmouth Canal today. Vicky, our professional instructor was very pleased with Group 2s skill in battling against the wind and the rain as we demonstrated skills in going round in circles, forwards, backwards and even sideways. We enjoyed a game of 'ball in the boat' and ended the session with capsizing our canoes. Amy lost one wellie and a sock as a result and Flavia's canoe was nearly lost forever! The Trewern adventure week has got off to a great start and we're all very excited about what the next activities will bring. (Mrs Gough)

Group 3 - What a great day we had! We started the day by learning some fantastic forest skills. We started a fire without any matches, made a homemade kazoo from a stick and grass and built a shelter to eat our lunches in. We even cooked a pizza on our outdoor fire! Also, Congratulations to Zivile who won the miniature shelter contest! In the Afternoon, we went to the climbing walls and learned how to rock climb and abseil. We had a great day! (Mr DesRoches)

Smallwood Visit Day 3

After a good night's sleep, everyone began the day with a well-mannered breakfast session. After an singing practice in the Chapel, our pupils were treated to an art session with Mrs Oliver. It was a calm, hardworking session where so much was achieved; prints, pastels and dreamcatchers were used and created.

After this, we rambled for about a mile up the hill to Framlingham church which was built by the owner of Smallwood Manor before it became a school. We were allowed inside the church to have a look around.

After a quick lunch break, it was off for a swimming session then into the Wildlife area with their Smallwood buddies to help develop this new project; bees nests were made as well as many bulbs planted.

The pupils are currently writing a card to their buddy before dinner. This evening we are honoured guests at Smallwood's Summer Serenade; an event where parents are invited to be entertained by all sorts of musical items.

So, all in all, a very busy day!

Smallwood Manor Day 2

Day 2 consisted of a morning visit to Cannock Chase Forest and a Sports Afternoon. As is the theme of the week, the two sets of pupils were mixed to experience both of these events.

Cannock Chase Forest gave the pupils a challenge to build a shelter in 30 mins with whatever they could find around them. Have a look at the images; did they do a good job? The shelters were tested by pouring water over the top of the shelter with the children inside and seeing who stayed dry!

The pupils were then asked to try and light a fire using a piece of equipment which created sparks and a little cotton wool. It was really hard to get the fire to start but some groups managed it.
In the afternoon, the boys and girls split and played different games for 2 hours. The children all showed a very good team spirit and applauded others when they deserved it.

We have a DVD to watch this evening as well as a few other games before heading off to bed.

Smallwood Manor Visit Day 1

We arrived up in Uttoxeter, Staffordshire on time and were met by Mr Harrison (Head) and Mrs Moseley (Deputy Head) who took us to Smallwood Manor by minibus. There we met up with our Y6 buddies and went off to explore the beautiful grounds of this school.

The pupils mixed really well from the start and followed on from the tour to carry out various activities and games inside and outside the school. Dinner was very tasty (omelette, chips and beans) and led on to our last activity of the day with the Smallwood pupils; a campfire. We were joined by Maria, a storyteller, who wowed us with tales of worlds gone by. We roasted marshmellows and then headed back indoors to bid goodbye to the Smallwood pupils. We showered and then spent some time trying to capture all the events and emotions of the day in a diary.

Smallwood Manor Visit Fast Approaching!

17 Y6 pupils have all received their letters to help prepare them for our first ever visit to Smallwood Manor School. They are travelling with Mr McTaggart, Mrs Stevart and Miss Risius.We are staying at the school in Staffordshire from Tuesday 21st June to Friday 24th June 2011. We are going to link very closely with the Year 6 pupils there with lots of different activities planned during the day and in the evenings. Group 3 spent their last full day walking up Hay Bluff and then gorge splashing. They saved their best performance to last and really impressed their leaders. They had a great time standing with one foot in England and one in Wales!

Group 2 went caving today at Porth-yr-Ogorf. They completed many challenges including the scarily named 'Death Ledge' as well as the Letterbox and The Washing Machine. Some pupils really surprised the group by leading by example and trying things first. Well done to you!

Group 1's last activity was a comparison study of Hay-on-Wye with Dagenham, rock-climbing and archery. The group excelled themselves in all areas. In particular the climbing enabled all the pupils to show great communication, teamwork and listening skills. Well done!

Group 2 achieved great things on the climbing wall today which is based at the centre. They also fitted in some archery as well as a walk into Hay-on-Wye to explore the town and compare it to Dagenham.

Group 1 went up a mountain called Blaen y Glyn today. The weather was cold but very bright and the view was magnificent from the summit. We slid down the other side and went for scrambles in and out of the stream. We also completed a challenge where we walked through a disused railway tunnel WITHOUT a torch!!

Tuesday night saw animals take over Trewern as the evening activity got underway. The children learnt about food webs by becoming different animals. They were either hunters or the hunted!

Group 3 went caving today with Miss Risius and Mr Pillinger accompanying Dave the Instructor. They completed the Letterbox and the Washing Machine (in reverse) as well as other group exercises. Lots of smiles and even some sleeping on the way back!

Group 2 went to Hay Bluff for a mountain walk with Mrs Gough and Sarah (Instructor). They ate their lunch at the summit then came back down again to finish off with a splash in the gorge. They had a very enjoyable day!

Group 1 went caving with Graeme (Instructor) and Mr McTaggart at Porth yr Ogorf. It was a great day where we discussed lots of science ideas and then got to go down into the cave. We negotiated the Letterbox and the Washing Machine successfully and returned rather muddy and cold but definitely cheerful.

Dave (Instructor), Miss Risius, Mr Pillinger and the rest of the group visited the charming town of Hay-on-Wye in the morning and then returned to Trewern House for lunch. After that they received instruction on the climbing wall as well as some archery.

We have had such a great time here at Trewern. This has been such a great opportunity for us to do many things we wouldn't normally do. We enjoyed making new friends, trying new things and discovering things about ourselves we didn't know before. We want to thank the teachers and the instructors for making our time here so magical. We look forward to coming home and seeing everyone again. We have so much to tell everyone. It rocked!!!!
Year 6, Henry Green 2009-10

It was great to see the sun today! The weather held out for us which allowed everyone to have a really fun time. I got some excellent reports from all the instructors about how well everyone got along and how well they participated in all the activities. The theme for the week was "try something new". Everyone has been trying things outside of their comfort zone and having some new, exciting experiences. What has been really nice to see is that everyone is making new friends and talking with other students they may not have talked to before. Way to go everyone!

Today Group 1 enjoyed the day gorge walking and climbing. They really felt they accomplished alot because it really takes great endurance. Well done!
Today group 2 went up the mountain. Every time they reached a peak there was one more to go! They thought it would never end. Then, it all paid off for them when they reached the top. It was a spectacular view. They really achieved a fantastic feat.
Group 3 had a fabulous time canoeing on the Wye river. They got to see some really rare birds while they paddled along! Team work was the goal for the day and boy, did they every do well! When they returned they even had time to do some archery!

The previous night was loads of fun for everyone when we went out into the dark and did some orienteering. Reading maps by a torch isn't as easy as it appears, especially when there are no street lights to help you. The sheep weren't much help either!

Today was wet, but it didn't keep our spirits down! During breakfast there were murmurs and rumours floating about that about everyone having to stay indoors and watch a film. For a moment we thought it was going to be gloomy. Then, we got out our Henry Green spirit and went for it anyway! We were so glad that we did because it was a brilliant day.
Today Group 1 went canoeing. They learnt paddling techniques which they found very useful. Paddling in straight lines and not in circles down the river is much better as some found out the hard way. :)
Group 2 did a gorge walk and discovered water levels are higher when it rains. Swimming in a wetsuit and wellingtons isn't so easy. They also spent the morning on the climbing wall learning to belay someone while they climbed up the steep wall.
Group 3 went caving. They learnt a lot about how the caves were formed, how the fossils came to be embedded in the walls of the cave, and when you lay on your back and stick your feet in the air with wellingtons on that are full of water, your going to get wet trousers!

Hello everyone!
After a snack last night and a good night sleep, we were all ready for a great day out doors. The weather was a little cloudy, but other than that, the temperature was perfect for out door activities.
Group 1 went caving today. They had a great time crawling around with their miner lights on their helmets. They even managed to squeeze their way through something called "the letterbox".
Group 2 enjoyed the day canoeing on the river Wye. There were a lot of wet suits used for this and I heard that Mrs. Marshall even had an unexpected swim in the river. :)
Group 3 enjoyed the climbing walls here today. There were beginning climbs and more adventurous ones as well. The fun part was realizing that once you got to the top, you had to make your way down!
Overall the day was fantastic. Everyone has cleaned up and are getting ready for dinner now. After that there's planned activities in the hall.

Remember to be at school for about 1:15pm on Sunday. The coach will leave at 1:30pm. Please try and have a full lunch before you go and pack something to eat on the coach for later.
The group should be arriving at about 6:30pm but as always, this is dependent on the traffic conditions. I will send out a Groupcall message to let all parents know that the group have arrived. I am sending a test message on Saturday morning to all the parents' mobiles. If you didn't receive a message, bring your number along on Sunday and inform one of the teaching staff.

Well, I can't believe how quickly this week has gone. Today, the Henry Green group will be showing their movie files to each other, responding to the emails sent back to us from Jing'an school and also having some PE time. Once again, the sun is shining brightly!

I know that the Trewern group have got a long journey back to Dagenham, and for some this will be a chance to have an extra rest / sleep after what has no doubt been a tiring, yet rewarding and exciting week. The Henry Green group have also had a brilliant week, and I've been hearing great things about the Trewern group too. It just goes to show the great attitude that Henry Green pupils have, no matter where they happen to be.

I'm looking forward to year 6 being reunited next week, and hearing lots of stories and amusing tales!

Have a safe journey back. Current estimated time of arrival is around 4pm. Parents, we will put a message in the school reception if this changes.

Trewern Thursday Update

The Trewern group awoke to a bright sunny morning overlooking a misty valley......how beautiful. Group 1 went to Hay-on-Wye (or the Shopping Trip as Mrs Anderson called it) and came back for some climbing in the afternoon. Group 2 had a canoeing day on the canal at Pencelli with Graham and Mrs Stephens. The photos are shown below. Group 3 went climbing a mountain at Blaen-y-Glyn. I'll describe this in a little more detail here.
As we neared the mountain, past the Tal-y-Bont reservoir, the weather began to cloud over. We climbed up the mountain really well as a group; supporting those that found the climb difficult and taking it in turns to lead. At the summit it was very blustery but we could see for 40 miles all the way to the sea! Everyone got very excited and did loads of jumps in the air for the camera. I'll try and put these images up soon as they are truly remarkable.
On the way down, we found some really hairy caterpillars amidst the boggy grass in the valley. At the bottom, we managed to walk all the way through a disused railway tunnel without the aid of a light (even though it was pitch dark in the middle of it). This was the group's best achievement today if you ask me! Later on we drove down the hill a little and headed towards the gorge. There was just enough time left in the day to shuffle along a ridge underneath an enormous waterfall and be swept into the icy plunge pool. Everyone had a go at this and although they got wet through, they all had a wide beaming smile after doing it.
Andy was our instructor and we all thanked him for his expert tuition and infinite patience throughout a busy week.
As I write this quick blog, the children have all packed up and are palying 'Predator Prey' ; a chasing game which also teaches them about food chains! We'll be heading inside in a moment to have hot chocolate and a piece of Gabby and Alex's birthday cake.
All the children are looking forward to seeing everyone at home tomorrow although many of them are asking if they can come back again on Monday!!!

HENRY GREEN GROUP - THURSDAY

Another sunny day, and we're off to the CLC (City Learning Centre) to discover how to make our own movies. We'll be using the photos and videos taken yesterday of our kite making / flying day to create movies. We will also learn how to add effects, graphics and music.

I'm writing this from the CLC. We've just had lunch and a play around on the field. The weather is just beautiful for October! So far, we've imported our pictures and videos, created some slide transition effects and learn how to edit / shorten clips. We have also been putting titles and credits onto our movies. Our next step is to incorportate sound and music - watdh this space.

Everybody is enjoying themselves, and have impressed Mr Ward, who is our teacher for the day at the CLC.

STOP PRESS:

There have been comments made about the absence of cakes for Mr. London's birthday. Mr. London has stated that he will be celebrating his official birthday next week when the Trewern group are back. He also does not want Mr. McTaggart, Mrs. Anderson, Mrs. Stephens and Mrs. Marshall to miss out on this important annual event. Mrs. Delivett, however, is not convinced, and will be starting her own collection for these . . .We eagerly await the outcome to this situation.

Today we went to Hay-on-Wye and we compared it to Barking and Dagenham. We found that it didn't have as many cars as back at home but there were shops too. We had a very good time shopping.
After lunch we went rock climbing and abseiling. It was very difficult for some but everyone tried their best. It was very enjoyable

We had lots of fun.
In the afternoon we went up a mountain and there were lots of sheep (and sheep deposits). It was very steep but we all got to the summit. Then we rolled down the hill!

Thank you to all the parents and family members who have left comments on this blog; I'm glad people are finding it useful and informative. One issue has arisen though; it is going to be impossible for me to guarantee to pass on all the messages for the children. So just to clarify, the blog was set up in order to share news of the Activity week so that users would have access to news and pictures quickly. So carry on commenting on reports and pictures but please realise that the blog cannot be a messaging service. I apologise for any misunderstanding in the purpose of the blog and I'll endeavour to make it clearer next time!

WEDNESDAY - KITE MAKING

Wednesday was our kite day. We begen in the morning with a Science Museum quiz, in which groups had to answer various quesitons about the trip, including the museum and the journey to and from it. Also participating was Mrs Delivett, aka Lady X. However, she came last, much to her embarassment! You just can't get the staff these days . . .(!)

After this, we began the acutal process of kite making, The children worked in pairs, albeit with a couple of solo efforts. We spent the best part of the morning and the first bit of the afternoon carefully following a design, and then carefully cutting, pasting, drawing plus a range of other skills in order to get the finished product.

We then had a few minutes in the ICT suite where we attempted to post some comments on the blog. However, the internet was in a temperamental mood, and only some of the posts actually made it through. Never mind!

Finally, it was time to actually fly the kites. It was a lovely sunny day, but there wasn't really enough wind. Despite this, we still managed to get the kites off the ground. Check out the pictures.

On Thursday, we're off to the CLC to make some movie files of the kite making and flying. We'll share these when everybody is back together next week.

Dark, drizzly and damp; not a great start to a Tuesday! However, it was mild as we set off for our second day of activities. Group 1 went Caving with Mrs Anderson. They arrived home wet but really excited from what they had experienced. Group 2 went mountain walking with Mrs Marshall. The weather finally lifted and they, too were full of heroic stories and endevours. Finally, Group 3 went canoeing on the canal with Mrs Stephens and myself. We had a fantastic time although I think we spent more time in the water rather than out of it. It ended up more like swimming next to canoes rather than paddling in them!
As I go to get ready for dinner, some of the boys are having a game of football on the field and everyone else is buried away in different corners of the house deep in conversation about the day's events.
Tonight, we will be doing the 'Nightline' activity which involves wearing a helmet and a blindfold and following a line around various outdoor obstacles. Should be fun! I hope to put some more pictures up soon too.

SCIENCE MUSEUM TRIP

Today, the Henry Green group went on their eagerly awaited trip to the Science Musuem. With forecasts of heavy rain, everybody was armed with coats and umbreallas!

It was actually a really good day. Every train we went on was running on time, proving that public transport isn't as bad as everyone says it is.

At the museum, we went to three separate shows:

1. The "Feel the Force" show, where we learnt all about different types of forces in a fun and exciting way. We saw a character called "Phil the Frog" being crashed off the end of ramps, and launched in the air tied to a bottle rocket. He survived, after some resuscitaion by our host. Apparently, Phil is a stunt double in Hollywood . . . mmmmmm!

2. The Launchpad. This is a hands on area, where you can see and try out scientific ideas for yourself. Everyone got stuck in, and lots of people were puzzled as to how they could see each other through a wall. Yes, it was opaque. Science buffs out there, any clues?

3. The Energy show, where we looked at how dependent we are on electricity, and also on non renewable energy sources. It was quite scary to think just how much we do depend on electricity. No phones, no fridges, no computer to write this on. And the one that got the biggest gasp - no TV. However did we all live before EastEnders . . . .

Everybody got back safe and sound, although apparently I (Mr London) was walking too fast as usual, especially for Mrs Delivett! We're now all looking forward to putting some science into action tomorrow, with a Science Museum quiz and yes, the long awaited kite making session.

And as for the rain, it was only spitting a bit on the way back from the station. Wonder what it was like in Trewern . . .

A misty and cold start for all as we excitedly found out what activities we would be doing today. Group 1 (Mrs Anderson) went canoeing on the canal (as the river Wye was too high). Group 2 (Mrs Marshall/Mr McTaggart) went caving at Porth yr Ogorf. Finally Group 3 (Mrs Stephens) conducted a local study of Hay-on-Wye and spent the afternoon climbing and abseiling at the centre.
Every group received very positive comments from each instructor and there has been lots of 'news' and events to talk to each other about since we got back. Everyone hungrily finished off every last scrap of the bangers and mash on offer at dinnertime and are about to do some evening orienteering. I'm hoping to take some pictures of this so will keep you posted.

We left Henry Green and the driving rain more or less on time and made our way around the M25. Gradually the further away from London we drove, the more the weather cleared up. By the time we arrived at Trewern it was dark and cold. We unpacked and wrestled with our bedding then went for a quick night walk around the centre. The rivers were full and fierce after 24 hours of steady rain.
Despite the excitement, everyone was asleep by 10.30pm; dreaming of what might lie ahead of them this week.
